Are you passionate about creating sustainable and liveable urban environments? The City Strategy and Design unit at Canterbury Bankstown City Council is seeking an experienced Urban Designer to join our Urban Design team. This team of professionals brings a sophisticated understanding of urban form and placemaking principles to deliver innovative and high-quality outcomes for our community.
As an Urban Designer, you will provide expert urban design advice, lead and manage a variety of projects, and contribute to updating Council’s planning and design instruments. This is an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, where your skills will help shape the future of one of Sydney’s fastest-growing areas.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop layouts, maps, diagrams, and 3D models to update planning and design instruments.
- Conduct scenario testing using 3D modelling tools (e.g., Giraffe – easily learned for experienced designers).
- Support the Design Review Panel and provide strategic advice for city-shaping projects.
- Prepare project briefs and manage external consultants for urban design-related projects.
- Design and deliver urban design studies, create spatial frameworks, and inform planning controls (LEPs and DCPs).
- Provide advice on planning proposals, state significant developments, and development applications.
- Represent Council in dealings with government agencies and in Land and Environment Court matters.
- Engage with key stakeholders and the community to promote design excellence and liveability.
About You
We’re looking for someone with:
- Tertiary qualifications in Urban Design or a related field (e.g., Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning).
- A minimum of 4 years’ experience in urban design, master planning, and urban renewal.
- Expertise in preparing built form controls, guidelines, and urban design policies.
- Proficiency in software such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Suite, CAD, and 3D modelling tools (e.g., Giraffe, SketchUp).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to visually communicate ideas through sketches or digital tools.
- A solid understanding of the NSW planning system and development control policies (LEP, DCP).
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex projects on time and within budget.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in Local or State Government.
- Qualifications or experience in project management or community engagement.
- Knowledge of heritage conservation and sustainable urban design principles.
- Understanding of Land and Environment Court procedures.
