About The Role
As Senior Media Advisor, you will contribute to building and protecting the organisation’s brand and reputation by driving proactive media engagement and responding to emerging issues with professionalism and speed. Reporting to the Manager, Media and Reputation, you’ll work as part of a fast-paced, collaborative communications team focused on strategic storytelling, proactive Public Relations, and issues preparedness.
This role is a unique opportunity to influence how the public understands and values essential public services through traditional and earned media. It requires strategic media planning, strong relationships with journalists and stakeholders, and a sharp eye for reputation management.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and implement proactive media and Public Relations strategies to drive positive coverage and public sentiment.
Maintain a rolling calendar of Public Relations activities, prepare media materials, and pitch stories to targeted media outlets.
Respond to media enquiries with clear, accurate, and timely statements, ensuring spokespeople are well-prepared.
Monitor media activity in real time, prepare daily reports and flag emerging issues or opportunities to leadership.
Participate in a rotating on-call roster, contributing to effective incident and issues response protocols.
Soft Skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into media-friendly language.
Excellent interpersonal and relationship management skills, particularly with media contacts and internal stakeholders.
Sound judgement and the ability to manage sensitive issues with discretion and professionalism.
Highly organised, deadline-focused, and capable of working under pressure in a dynamic team environment.
Adaptive, proactive, and calm when responding to emerging media situations.
Desirables
Tertiary qualifications in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related discipline.
Experience in media or public relations within large or complex organisations.
Familiarity with government or utility sector communications practices.
Skills in media monitoring tools and analytics reporting.
Understanding of risk and reputation in a public-facing, regulated environment.
