Chef jobs are available in diverse contract types, including:
- chef jobs - permanent: in a permanent position, you work as a chef for the same hotel or restaurant until retirement or resignation. It is the ideal role if you are looking for a long-term position.
- chef jobs - contract: in a contract position, you work as a chef for a fixed duration. Contract work is a good way to determine if you are the right fit for the role and enjoy working as a chef.
- chef jobs – temporary: in a temporary role, you work as a chef for a short-term period, usually a few months. Temporary positions allow you to improve your cooking skills without a long-term commitment.

If you are interested in becoming a chef, a university degree or an apprenticeship is a great place to begin. For information on the qualifications and relevant education needed for the role, see the 'education and qualifications' section of our chef job profile.
While formal education training is not mandatory, it helps you improve your culinary skills and prepares you for senior chef roles. You can pursue a Certificate III in commercial cookery, a Certificate III in bread baking, or a Certificate III in patisserie. These courses are part of an apprenticeship programme, which means you can improve your experience through on-the-job training.
