Randstad is proud to be partnering with a State Government agency seeking an experienced and strategic Head of Financial Accounting to lead a high-performing team during a critical period of financial oversight and reporting.
About the Role
Working closely with the CFO, this role is pivotal in leading the financial accounting function with a focus on process improvement, compliance, and high-quality service delivery. You’ll be responsible for overseeing general ledger accuracy, asset register integrity, external reporting obligations (including taxation), and audit processes.
This position plays a hands-on role in supporting internal leadership with critical financial insights, while also mentoring a team to align with the organisation’s strategic and operational goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the month-end close process, ensuring accuracy across the general ledger and fixed asset register
- Provide insightful variance analysis and commentary to support executive decision-making
- Monitor monthly cash flow and ensure timely reconciliations of balance sheet accounts
- Oversee delivery of internal and external financial reporting including DH reports, budget, forecast, statutory accounts, and compliance returns (e.g. MHE, ABS, WorkCover)
- Lead external audit coordination and support internal audit initiatives
- Ensure accurate BAS and FBT preparation, maintaining compliance with relevant tax legislation
- Drive a culture of performance and improvement within the Financial Accounting team
- Foster a collaborative team environment while supporting individual development
About You:
- Proven experience in a senior financial accounting leadership role, ideally within the public sector
- Demonstrated ability to lead a team, manage competing deadlines, and drive process improvement
- Expertise in month-end close, financial reporting, and audit processes
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills
- Proficiency with accounting systems (experience with Magiq and Microsoft D365 highly regarded)
- Strong Microsoft Excel and financial analysis capabilities
Qualifications Required:
- Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Accounting or related discipline
- CPA or CA membership (essential)
