About the Role
As a FinOps Analyst, you will play a critical role in managing AWS financials, identifying cost-saving opportunities, and aligning cloud usage with strategic business and financial goals. You'll be responsible for analysing spend, creating detailed reports, automating processes, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive transparency and accountability in cloud costs.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead AWS budgeting, forecasting, and cost optimisation initiatives
- Provide in-depth analysis using AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, and Cost and Usage Reports (CUR)
- Leverage tools such as AWS Trusted Advisor, CloudWatch, S3, DynamoDB, Lambda, and others to extract and analyze financial data
- Apply FinOps best practices to monitor, report, and optimise AWS spend
- Utilise scripting and automation (e.g., Python, Bash, or similar) to retrieve and manipulate platform data, automate reporting, and manage cloud infrastructure efficiently
- Develop insights and actionable recommendations through financial reporting to drive cost savings and improve cloud ROI
- Partner with engineering, operations, and finance teams to align cloud resource usage with business and financial strategies
- Support cost allocation, tagging strategies, chargeback/showback models, and enforce cloud financial governance policies
Mandatory Requirements
- 5+ years of experience in managing AWS financials, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost optimisation
- Expert-level proficiency with AWS Cost Explorer, AWS Budgets, and AWS Cost and Usage Reports
- Deep knowledge of AWS pricing models, including Reserved Instances, Savings Plans, and Spot Instances
- Extensive experience with core AWS services, with the ability to interact programmatically and via reporting tools
- Strong scripting and automation skills applied to cloud cost management workflows
- Proven ability to generate insights from financial data and recommend optimisation strategies
- Experience working within cross-functional teams in cloud environments
- Knowledge of FinOps principles, including cost allocation, chargeback/showback, and governance
- Australian Citizenship (essential due to security clearance requirements)
- Baseline Security Clearance with the ability to obtain NV1 clearance
- Experience working in large-scale government or public sector environments
- Strong understanding of cloud governance frameworks and public sector procurement
- Familiarity with cloud management platforms and integration with financial systems
