Role
Operating from within the department, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality spatial products, with a primary focus on creating maps and visualisations that support the Department's work. As part of a professional and multi-skilled team, your responsibilities will centre on the design, production and delivery of mapping outputs—both static and interactive—that communicate complex groundwater and environmental data. While contributing to broader scientific and modelling projects, your role will be predominantly focused on the preparation of clear, accurate and visually compelling maps to support the department's high standard reports and objectives to manage cumulative management areas (CMAs) in Queensland.
Key Duties and Accountabilities
- Assist in the delivery and management of mapping products ensuring adherence to the relevant Departmental standards.
- Provide specialist technical skills for spatial web services, databases, software and tools across spatial data management and visualisation environments.
- Develop, deliver and maintain solutions for storage, management and publication of spatial data sets including integration with related data sets stored in corporate applications.
- Understand user requirements/issues and provide knowledgeable technical advice to staff and customers on the optimal use/deployment/maintenance of spatial applications and web services.
- Contribute to the creation of innovative solutions and efficient processes to improve the data management and the delivery of associated products and services.
- Coordinate with other staff within the department to ensure high level of spatial data delivery and effective use of spatial technologies.
- Work independently and/or within a team environment by interacting with staff on a project basis to ensure that objectives are completed in a timely, appropriate, and effective manner.
Role requirements
- A Degree qualification in the field of Spatial Sciences, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Environmental Science, Geology, Remote Sensing/Earth Observation, Information Technology, Data Science, or an agreed equivalent as determined by the Director General
- Demonstrated ability to use ArcGIS platform, specifically delivering mapping products using ArcGIS Pro.
- Demonstrated ability to use to have experience with managing large amounts of datasets, maintaining geodatabases and geospatial libraries.
- While not mandatory, it is highly desirable for the applicant to have experience and/or interest in developing skills to use geospatial analysis tools:
- Programming languages (e.g. Python, JavaScript, Structured Query Language (SQL))
- Spatial data (raster, vector) and metadata management
- Delivering mapping products through web services and ArcGIS Online.
- Criminal history check prior to appointment
- Current Australian working rights (to be provided upon application)
It is expected that the successful candidate will possess strong oral/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. They will display initiative, attention to detail, and have the ability to work autonomously and unsupervised whilst contributing to the wider team's objectives of ensuring service delivery exceeds expectations.
