About the Opportunity:
Randstad is proud to be currently supporting a local council in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne, in their recruitment of an Economic Development Officer for a 3-month labour hire contract.
As an Economic Development Officer, you will contribute to the council's Economic Development Strategy by supporting local businesses, fostering partnerships, implementing strategic projects, and creating local employment opportunities through collaboration across council teams and the business community.
This role requires a strong strategic understanding and a proactive operational approach to design and deliver innovative projects. You will directly engage in areas such as small business support, workforce development, trader groups, and strategic initiatives to achieve significant outcomes for the local business community. This position offers a key opportunity to take responsibility for project design and delivery across both the business sector and the wider community, ensuring cross-council collaboration to deliver shared economic outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
... - Implement Council’s Economic Development Strategy and related policies to support and grow the local business community
- Collaborate across departments to lead and deliver economic development initiatives and improve service outcomes
- Build and maintain strong relationships with local businesses, trader groups, and external stakeholders
- Develop and deliver targeted support programs to enhance local business activity and create employment opportunities
- Promote career pathways through workforce initiatives and events focused on youth and career transition
- Connect the business community with sustainability and circular economy initiatives
- Support and grow social enterprises and their employment outcomes
- Lead small business support initiatives, including streamlining processes under the Better Approvals Project
- Coordinate business recognition programs such as local excellence awards
- Use Council systems to document business engagement and maintain accurate records
- Provide specialist advice to the business community and ensure compliance with regulations
- Manage stakeholder relationships and deliver projects on time, within scope and budget
- Apply sound judgement and economic development expertise to solve problems and inform decisions
- Contribute to continuous improvement by identifying opportunities for innovation and better service delivery
- Communicate effectively across audiences and collaborate with colleagues to achieve shared outcomes
- Work independently, manage competing priorities, and take responsibility for your own professional development
The ideal candidate for these roles will demonstrate the following skills and experience:
- Have a strategic understanding of how to identify, design and implement economic development initiatives
- Possess strong interpersonal and negotiation skills to enable the development of long term sustainable internal and external relationships
- Able to apply best practice in the economic development context demonstrating well developed strategic, conceptual and analytical thinking skills and methodologies
- Possess specialist knowledge and experience in best practice economic development, and the operations of small business, trader groups and activity centres
- Skilled in project management with the capacity for timely delivery of projects to budget
- Hold qualifications in economic development, commerce, business development, stakeholder engagement or a related field; and/or job related experience
- Hold a tertiary or post-graduate qualification in economic development, commerce, business development, or a related field
- Relevant experience in a business related role
- Possess a Victorian Drivers’ Licence
