The International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD), observed annually on December 3rd, serves as a global reminder of the importance of building inclusive communities where everyone, regardless of background and ability, has the chance to thrive. This year's United Nations theme for the annual observance is, "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disability for an inclusive and sustainable future," calls for action to empower individuals with disability as leaders of change.
At Randstad, our mission is to be the most equitable talent partner. This commitment means recognising the potential of people with disability and breaking down barriers that limit their participation in the workforce. With 15% of the world’s population living with a disability, the stakes are high. Despite their skills and capabilities, many still face challenges in accessing education, healthcare, and meaningful employment.
AI as a catalyst for equity
In support of our mission, we recently released the AI & Equity Report, which explores how artificial intelligence can serve as a powerful tool for driving disability inclusion. By embracing AI and ensuring equitable access to learning and accessibility support, we can empower people with disabilities to fully utilise the technology available to them, unlocking opportunities for sustainable and meaningful careers.
The report highlights a promising trend: talent with disability are strong adopters of AI. Over half of respondents with disability have used AI to problem-solve at work — a figure significantly higher than their peers without disability. This shows how technology can already be a game-changer. However, there’s a clear need for more focused support.
according to the report:
- Almost a third of employees with disability would consider leaving their job if their employer doesn’t provide AI skilling opportunities, compared to around a fifth of employees without disability.
- Employers that invest in equitable AI training can unlock new talent pools and retain valuable employees while addressing talent shortages.
steps to an inclusive future
Creating workplaces where everyone can thrive requires more than technology — it demands action. Here are three steps businesses can take to ensure equitable opportunities for people with disability:
-
1. invest in AI and accessibility training
Equip employees with the skills to use AI effectively, ensuring tailored support for those with disability.
-
2. promote accessible technology
Adopt tools and platforms designed with accessibility in mind, enabling greater participation and productivity.
-
3. foster inclusive leadership
Amplify the voices of employees with disability and create pathways for leadership and innovation.
By focusing on these actions, we can harness the full potential of AI to empower individuals with disability, addressing inequities and strengthening workplaces for all.
